Philosophy
We believe that rich, authentic Mexican food should not be relegated to dinner alone. That is why we offer breakfast, lunch, dinner, and catering with the same quality our customers have come to expect from our family. We take pride in sharing our rich tradition with our customers. Our philosophy is simple, make exceptional, traditional Mexican food, and offer it to our customers at an affordable price. Since the establishment of the original Joe T. Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant, we have maintained and extended those values to our neighborhood eatery, allowing us to continue sharing our delicious family recipes with both locals and visitors alike.
History
Esperanza “Hope” Garcia grew up in the kitchen. Surrounded by the rich and savory smells of authentic Mexican food, she was destined to create a successful restaurant. She opened Esperanza’s Bakery & Café in 1981 with the hope of bringing the same food she grew up with to the everyday table.
From day one, Esperanza’s was designed to be a home kitchen, away from home. The counter-service location on the North side served the predominantly Hispanic community with unpretentious, traditional, and authentic food. Neighbors could stop in for tamales wrapped to go, fresh pan dulce still warm from the oven, or a hearty burrito on the way to work.
Word traveled fast. The honest quality and the familiar taste of home-cooked Mexican food drew a loyal following, and over the years, Esperanza's has grown into the beloved café and community gathering place it is today.
